Mary
Chabot
Mary
is a remarkable woman who has
overcome obstacles with
determination and tenacity. She
was born in the Ontario village
of Formosa into a family of ten
children and is the last
daughter in the family. Her
school career ended at grade 8
after her mother died and Mary
took on the responsibility of
caring for her father and the
household. Later, she married
and started her family.
About
a decade ago, Mary enrolled in
an adult learning centre where
she met teachers who encouraged
her and told her she should
write. She wanted her Grade 12
diploma and went back to school
every time she got laid off from
a job finally graduating with
that precious Grade 12 diploma.
One of her honoured guests at
her graduation was a grandson
and it would be hard to say who
was more proud of her
achievement.
Mary
was “always fooling around
with a pencil” and has written
poetry all her life even though
she was discouraged by people. Keeper
of Memories is another
outstanding achievement in an
unusual life. |
